Michelangelo Antonioni, Italy's celebrated film director, has died at the age of 94.
The director of films including L'Avventura and Blowup died at his home in Italy on Monday night, according to Italian media reports.
His 60-year film career saw him acknowledged at some of the world's most exclusive awards ceremonies; in 1967 he was nominated for an Oscar for best director and writer for his hit Blowup, which won a Bafta for best British film.
He was also the recipient of five nominations for the top prize at the Cannes film festival, the Palme d'Or, and in 1995 he was handed an honorary Academy award for his work.
In 1985 he suffered a stroke which left him partially paralysed and unable to speak.
Antonioni's death follows that of another legendary director – Sweden's Ingmar Bergman.
He is survived by his wife Enrica Fico.
