The European Film academy (EFA) has named Romanian drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days its film of the year.
Christian Mungiu also picked up the best director award at the Berlin Arena ceremony.
His film, which features an illegal abortion in Communist-era Romania, is being tipped for Oscar glory after winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes earlier this year.
Academy award winner Helen Mirren received more praise for her eponymous lead role in Stephen Frears' The Queen after being named best actress.
The EFA gave its annual lifetime achievement award to Jean-Luc Godard, but the legendary French film-maker opted not to attend the ceremony in the German capital.
Explaining his decision last week he said: "When someone says I have created a life's work, I have to accept this.
"I don't have the impression that I have made a career. In French, the word also means quarry and in this sense I can accept it."
