Actress Angelina Jolie has called for greater support for Afghan refugees during her trip to the country.

The 33-year-old star, who is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations' refugee agency, has previously visited Afghanistan's neighbour, Pakistan, to see the situation in which refugees are living and has called for greater efforts to speed up the repatriation of those fleeing the violence in the country.

During the trip, the Hollywood actress also met with officials running income generating projects for refugees and visited people who recently returned to their homeland.

Speaking about her visit, Ms Jolie said: "The courage, resilience and quiet dignity of returnee families rebuilding their lives against the kind of adversity few of us can imagine shows the human spirit at its best."

Jolie's visit is aimed at boosting awareness of the issue ahead of a conference in Kabul next month which will discuss the issue of the repatriation of refugees.

Jolie has six children, three of whom have been adopted from Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia.
