Bourne bosses the box office

The Bourne Ultimatum is the third Bourne movie
The Bourne Ultimatum took $16.5 million over the weekend to retain top spot at the international box office.

The third instalment of the spy franchise, which stars Matt Damon, has taken close to $100 million, according to the latest figures from Screen Daily.

The film is running in 37 countries with another 20, including China, France and Belgium still to come.

This weekend saw it open in Germany, Mexico and Austria. Bourne held on to top spot in Australia and came in third in the UK.

Atonement, the romantic drama based on an Ian McEwan novel and starring Kiera Knightly and James McAvoy, grossed $3.3 million on its opening weekend, putting it joint top in the UK with another home-grown hit, Run, Fat Boy, Run.

Debutants making a splash in a number of countries included Adam Sandler's I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which pulled in $15.4 million.

The comedy about two macho firemen, who enter into a civil partnership in a bid to exploit the pension benefits, opens in the UK on September 27th.

Knocked Up pushed its worldwide takings to $44.5 million with another strong weekend and is closing on Evan Almighty, which has now taken $52 million.

The summer blockbusters continued to add to their tallies, with Transformers hitting $378.9 million and Die Hard 4.0 totalling $227.9 million.

The Simpsons Movie added $4.1 million to reach $309.4 million, while Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer finished the weekend at $142.8 million.
