Brad Pitt 'cut the cords' during birth of twins

Brad Pitt was by Angelina Jolie's side as she gave birth to twins
Brad Pitt was by his partner Angelina Jolie's side as she gave birth to twins, even cutting the babies' umbilical cords, according to her doctor.

Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon were born in the Lenval hospital in Nice, France, on Saturday.

And the expecting couple were a picture of calm during the birth, Jolie's physician Dr Michael Sussman revealed,

The pair "were talking, they were together," Dr Sussmann told reporters outside the Provencal hospital after the twins were born.

"It was an epidural, so [Angelina] was awake and speaking and laughing. They were happy."

Dr Sussman added that Pitt never left his partner's side - "he was my assistant!" he joked - and confirmed the Fight Club star had been on hand to cut the umbilical cords.

"He was... perfectly calm, totally determined, very pleased to be at the birth of his children, very moved and very emotional," the doctor added.

Jolie and Pitt are already parents to four children together: adopted children Maddox, six, four-year-old Pax Thien and Zahara, three, as well as biological daughter Shiloh, 20 months

The first pictures of the two newest additions to the Jolie-Pitt family are expected to sell for more than $10 million (£5 million).

"She will stay [in hospital] for a few days," Dr Sussman added. "You know, in Europe it isn't like in the United States, where the patients go home after three days. They will stay a bit longer until everything is okay.

"The babies are fine. The babies are with the mother and father and they are fine."
