Cruise named most powerful celeb
Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has been crowned most powerful celebrity in tinseltown by Forbes' annual Celebrity 100 Power List.

The War Of The Worlds and Mission: Impossible III star has reached the top of the celeb tree because of a combination of earnings and the buzz his presence creates – both in the box office and in tittle-tattle magazines.

In the last year the Cruise publicity machine has done everything it can to boost the actor. Promotional walkabouts at premieres, chatshow shenanigans and the birth of his daughter, Suri with celebrity wife Katie Holmes, have all helped Cruise repeat his 2001 success.

Equally influential have been his colossal earnings, Forbes said, citing the whopping £36 million he pocketed for his role in the Steven Spielberg-directed War Of The Worlds.

Spielberg himself came sixth in the overall poll but first in the exclusively financial earnings rankings, making £179 million, closely pursued by the £163 million taken by shock jock Howard Stern.

In the overall ratings it was the Rolling Stones who came second to Cruise, their ageing antics and perpetual touring lifestyle maintaining a powerful draw – according to Forbes, at least. Their rankings placed The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown tenth and Harry Potter creator JK Rowling 19th.

Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney appears to have not been damaged by his high-profile divorce with estranged wife Heather Mills, making $77 million on a North American tour last year to place him in 14th, while Elton John also graces two places below McCartney.

From the sporting world golfer Tiger Woods is highest at fifth, while Muhammad Ali's $80 million sale of trademark rights to his name earned him a 13th place ranking. England football captain David Beckham came in a lowly 43rd in the poll.

But their achievements have all been beaten by those of Tom Cruise, who has pushed his way up from tenth place last year to the top spot.

With new films including 2008's The Few and the rumoured 3:10 To Yuma coming up in 2007, it looks like Cruise is already plotting next year's defence of his Forbes title.End of story
