McFly have confirmed that the recent release of their Greatest Hits album was not their decision - and said they won't be splitting up.

Bassist Dougie Poynter has said the group's record company forced them to release a best-of collection just three albums into their career, a move the Obviously stars found "frustrating".

When asked why the band had chosen to release the Greatest Hits, Poynter told Digital Spy: "It wasn't really our decision. It's in our record contract that they can release a greatest hits whenever they want, so we figured that if we're going to do it, we might as well get 100 per cent behind it."

He added: "I'm not angry about it, but I'd rather have released one more album and then done a greatest hits album. It would have made for a better mix of songs.

"After just three albums, it does feel very soon and you do get a lot of people thinking that we're going to split up now. It is a little frustrating."

Poynter added that the band are to fly to Australia in January to begin work on their fourth album.

Of McFly's thirteen top ten singles, seven have reached the number one spot in the UK, with latest release The Heart Never Lies hitting number three after coinciding with Take That's Rule the World and Leona Lewis' hugely successful Bleeding Love.
