David Tennant has earned rave reviews for his comedic turn in a new production of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost.

The Doctor Who star plays Berowne in the Royal Shakespeare Company's (RSC) Stratford-upon-Avon production and has been commended for his "quick-witted, wry, waggish and mischievous" performance.

The Times' Benedict Nightingale added that the Scottish actor "radiates unstoppable wit and humour" while Daily Express theatre critic Neil Norman said Tennant is "at home on the stage in a great RSC company as he is at the controls of the Tardis".

And while the Daily Mail said he "despatches the role with levity and conviction", the Guardian's Michael Billington said the play "confirms Tennant's Shakespearean status".

Critical acclaim for Tennant's acting comes just months after his well-received debut as Hamlet, also for the RSC.

Both productions are played in repertoire at the RSC's Courtyard Theatre until November 15th, at which point Hamlet will transfer to London's Novello Theatre.

Tickets for the London performances have been quickly snapped up, though fans will be able to see the play with on-the-day tickets once shows begin in December.
