Kiefer Sutherland was arrested for drink-driving in the early hours, it has emerged.

An illegal U-turn resulted in the 40-year-old's arrest shortly after 01:00 local time (09:00 BST) this morning. He had been attending the Fox Fall Eco-Casino party in Los Angeles earlier in the evening.

Sutherland was bailed for $25,000 (£12,390) at around 05:00 (13:00 BST) local time after being held at a Los Angeles police station.

He will appear before a judge on October 16th when, according to the CNS news agency, he may face a jail term after being previously arrested in 2004. The mandatory minimum sentence for the charge is up to five days imprisonment.

Sutherland was expecting to receive an award from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists later today.

The star won a best actor Emmy in 2006 for his role as Jack Bauer in 24 and a film version of the show is in the pipeline.
