Jeff Hordley has sensationally quit ITV soap Emmerdale amid rumours of discontent behind the scenes.
Hordley has been on the show for the past six years and has become a household name for his portrayal of Dales bad boy Cain Dingle.
However, his days are now every much numbered, although the split is, publicly at least, said to be amicable.
Hordley, who previously appeared in Coronation Street and Heartbeat, is leaving "to pursue other projects", a statement said.
"I've had a great time on Emmerdale and feel privileged to have been given so many fantastic storylines," he added.
Emmerdale series producer Kathleen Beedles paid tribute to Hordley and said the cast and producers had not wanted to see him leave.
"Jeff is an extremely talented actor and a well-respected member of cast and we are very sorry to see him go," she said.
"We wish him best of luck for the future."
How his character will leave has not yet been revealed although reports suggest he will not be killed off, thus allowing for a dramatic return should his other projects fail to take off.
