Big Brother star Shilpa Shetty could be the face of a new reality cricket show set to come to British shores.

Cricket Star, which currently airs in India, is being launched in the UK, as a Pop Idol-style contest in which aspiring young cricketers seek to make their way to the top.

With the prospect of a contract with county club Leicestershire on offer, as well as potential fame and fortune, the creators of the show have decided that Bollywood star Shetty has the perfect CV to front the programme.

According to Investors in Cricket, which own the rights to the show, talks have begun with representatives of Shilpa, who has dominated headlines since the infamous race row erupted on Big Brother last week.

Fraser Castellino, chief executive of Cricket Star, spoke of the sport being "racially integrated across the world", adding Shilpa could energise British Asian support.

"While it is not the most popular sport in the UK, it is undergoing a large revival, and it is a critically important sport for the integration of British Asians in the UK. Hence, Shilpa will be the perfect host."

Shilpa's confrontation with Big Brother's most famous offspring, Jade Goody, prompted almost 40,000 complaints to Ofcom over accusations of racism.

Channel 4 was forced to make a public defence of Celebrity Big Brother, which has been dogged by controversy.

Shetty, meanwhile, is currently favourite to win the show, although she is up for eviction alongside Dirk Benedict, Jo O’Meara, Cleo Rocas and Ian Watkins this week.
