BBC dramas dominate Bafta shortlist
The lavish BBC One costume drama Bleak House and the satirical BBC Two political comedy, The Thick of It, dominate the nominations for the 2006 Bafta TV awards.

Bleak House, last year's extremely popular adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, starring Gillian Anderson of X Files fame, is up for four awards in May, including best drama serial.

Anderson is nominated in the actress category alongside co-star Anna Maxwell Martin, while Denis Lawson has been shortlisted for the best actor award.

The searingly funny BBC Three-turned BBC Two cult classic The Thick of It, which is set in the offices of an incompetent government minister, has also been singled out for praise by judges.

The show has been shortlisted in the Situation Comedy category, while Chris Langham and Peter Capaldi have both been nominated for the Comedy Performance gong, the latter for his brilliant performance as the unbelievably domineering spin-doctor Malcolm in the series.

Extras, Ricky Gervais' much praised follow-up to his award-winning The Office, is up for two awards - best situation comedy and Ashley Jensen for best comedy performance.

However, while BBC dramas dominate the shortlists, a number of Channel 4 dramas and series are also in the running.

The Queen's Sister, based around the life of Princess Margaret, is up for two awards, as is critically acclaimed drama The Government Inspector, exploring the circumstances surrounding the death of weapons inspector Dr David Kelly in 2003.

Other high-profile nominees include Bernard Hill for his performance as David Blunkett in More4's tongue-in-cheek drama, A Very Social Secretary, Jeremy Clarkson, who is nominated in the entertainment performance category, cult Channel 4 comedy Peep Show for best situation comedy and business reality TV shows Dragons Den and The Apprentice, which are up for the features award.
