Teen-friendly BBC shows launched

Kelly Osbourne will host Radio 1's Sunday night Surgery
News music and television shows specifically geared towards teenagers have been launched by the BBC.

Known as BBC Switch, the shows for 12- to 16-year-olds will appear across existing channels rather than on their own dedicated channel from mid-October.

Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac will co-host the new BBC2 programme Sound with Nick Grimshaw on Sunday afternoons.

The show will feature interviews and performances from new musicians in the UK, while the second television show dedicated to teens will be Saturday afternoon's Falcon Beach – a "coming-of-age" drama set in a "beautiful sun-soaked town".

Annie Mac takes the helm again for youngsters on the airwaves as on Sunday nights she will host a new three-hour show on Radio 1.

This will then be followed by the two-hour Radio 1 Surgery hosted by new signing Kelly Osbourne, during which she will field calls from listeners with questions and concerns.

Commenting on her new Sunday night slot, Annie Mac said: "The show is going to be like nothing heard on radio before. It's a proper challenge for me and something I can't wait to get stuck in to.

"As for Sound, I'm really looking forward to working with Grimmy and the opportunity to showcase new and upcoming bands on TV is truly exciting for me, it's so important that music gets this kind of TV exposure."

Osbourne added: "What's important to me is we'll be giving teenage listeners thoughtful, honest and realistic advice on a whole range of issues – without being patronising!"

BBC Switch also consists of a number of online sites which include information on puberty and relationships.
