Martin to leave Albert Square
James Alexandrou is quitting EastEnders after ten years on the soap, producers have confirmed.
The actor, who plays Martin Fowler in the BBC show, joined the cast in 1996 playing Pauline and Arthur Fowler's son.
He told the Sun: "I've decided to leave the show to experience other aspects of my industry. Having turned 21 I feel it is an appropriate time to leave.
"I owe everything to the show. I would love to come back one day - that is, if EastEnders will have me."
The actress who plays his screen wife Sonia, Natalie Cassidy, has also just revealed she plans to quit the show.
Writers are reportedly determined that the couple exit with a big storyline, but Martin fans shouldn't panic as he is not going to be killed off.
A BBC spokesperson said: "James has been a fantastic member of the cast and he goes with our best wishes. The door will be left open for his return."
