Nearly 15 million tune in to Diana concert

Nearly 15 million people tuned in to see a number of superstar acts perform at the Concert for Diana on Sunday.

The show, which was organised by Princess Diana's sons, Princes William and Harry, was scheduled on what would have been their mother's 46th birthday. Diana died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997.

As well as the 14.8 million UK viewers who tuned in, over 60,000 people were at Wembley to see the gig.

International figures are not yet available but it was expected that the global audience was in excess of 100 million.

Some of the acts performing at the event were among Diana's favourites, including Sir Elton John and Duran Duran.

More recent pop stars such as Lily Allen, Kanye West and P Diddy were also at the event performing some of their best-known tracks.

Comedian Ricky Gervais was also on hand to play a rendition of his spoof song Freelove Freeway with The Office character Gareth Kennan, played by the now Hollywood star Mackenzie Crook.

He then swiftly got "into character" as David Brent to do 'the dance', made famous by the Comic Relief episode of the hit BBC comedy show.

Sir Elton concluded the night's performances with a couple of his hit tunes, including Tiny Dancer.

Video tributes from Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair and Bill Clinton were also featured.
