Strictly Come Dancing star Gethin Jones is to host his own radio show once his contract with Blue Peter ends, it has been announced.

The Welsh presenter said earlier this month that he is to leave the flagship BBC children's show at the end of June after three years with the programme.

And it was confirmed on Monday that Jones - a former rugby player for Lancashire - will host the sports and entertainment magazine programme The Gethin Jones Show on BBC Radio 5 Live from July 5th.

The show, which will initially run for two months, is to be broadcast from 09:00 BST until noon on Saturdays before its timeslot is adjusted to fit around the radio station's coverage of the Beijing Olympics.

"Joining Radio 5 Live with my own show is fantastic and I can't wait to get started," said the 30-year-old. "I relish a challenge and my first venture into radio will be just that.

"I've always loved the station and look forward to bringing my own flavour to Saturday mornings."

Jones' stint with Blue Peter saw him training with the Welsh national rugby team, flying with the Red Arrows and starring as a Cyberman in Doctor Who.

And his participation in the fifth series of Strictly Come Dancing saw Jones' star rise as his initially-awkward dancing alongside partner Camilla Dallerup improved drastically, securing the TV presenter a third-place finish after he was voted off in a dance-off in the series' semi-final show.

Adrian Van Klaveren, who took over as controller of the station this week said he was "really excited that Gethin is joining the 5 Live team".

"He'll be a fresh new voice to capture the spirit of summer and his show will fit in perfectly with the rest of our special programmes during July and August," he added.
