Acid-tongued X Factor judge is named showbiz personality of the year
Pop mogul Simon Cowell led a host of celebrities honoured by the Variety Club last night.
The
X Factor judge was named showbusiness personality of the year at the ceremony hosted by former pop wannabee Myleene Klass.
Cowell has seen his stock rise recently with successful TV shows on both sides of the Atlantic including
Pop Idol,
American Idol and now
X Factor.
Reality TV has also raised the profile of another of last night's winners – celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.
The star of
Hell's Kitchen and
Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, who is currently presenting Channel 4's
The F-Word, won the terrestrial television personality of the year award.
Gail Porter, who recently lost her hair to alopecia, was named as the multichannel TV personality of the year, while Katie Melua won the recording artist of the year award.
Actor Stephen Fry, whose recent work includes BBC Two comedy
Absolute Power, was given a special award for his outstanding contribution to showbusiness.
Others to pick up awards included comedienne Catherine Tate, and actors Imelda Staunton and Richard Griffiths.
