Simpson: the trouble and strife
Jessica Simpson has got the rumour mill whirring after she was spotted shopping in Malibu without her wedding ring on her finger.
The Dukes of Hazzard star and her husband Nick Lachey have for months been the subject of much tabloid speculation concerning the stability of their marriage.
The couple could regularly be seen rowing on the reality TV show that charted their marital progress, Newlyweds, and now Jessica was spotted shopping with her friend with rather a naked wedding finger.
An onlooker was quoted in the Daily Star: "Jessica obviously had a lot on her mind as she seemed distant."
Simpson's father, Joe, conceded that the pair, who have been married for three years, do fight but claimed it was no different to other couples.
He told People magazine: "Do they fight? Hell yes, they fight.
"Have there been moments when Nick has wanted to leave Jessica or Jess has wanted to leave Nick? Absolutely.
"It's the same with me and my wife. If fighting is a sign of divorce, then we're all going to get divorced." There you have the brutal logic of a cynic.
And recently Jessica was spitting pearly white teeth over reports linking Nick with his ex squeeze, Jordana Jarjura, after they were spotted enjoying dinner together. Simpson insisted she trusted Lachey implicitly, and that the meeting had been completely innocent.
