Man sues florist for exposing affair
Printer friendly version
Bizarre American lawsuits have long been a rich source of incredulous amusement. We’ve had a man suing a homeowner’s insurance because he managed to get stuck in the house he was robbing, there was the Texan woman who somehow successfully sued a furniture store for $780,000 after she broke her ankle by tripping over her own toddler in the shop and then there was the man who attempted to sue Michael Jordan for looking like him.
Last week saw the emergence of a new one to add to the list: The man who tried to sue a florist for a million dollars because they inadvertently exposed his affair. The man in question, Leroy Greer of Missouri City, Texas, claims in the law suite that when 1-800 Flowers, from whom he’d purchased flowers for his girlfriend, sent a thank you note to his home that was subsequently found by his wife they breached contract.
The suite alleges that when Greer ordered the flowers he was assured that nothing would be sent to his home. Unfortunately the florist sent a discount voucher and a thank you note which his wife found. This prompted her to phone the company and request a receipt which they promptly faxed over, complete with the name of the woman the flowers, invoiced as "Occasion: Love & Romance", were sent to.
Understandably Greer’s wife quickly re-filed for divorce (they had previously been in the middle of divorce proceedings but had recently reconciled) and asked for a considerably larger settlement on the grounds of infidelity. Greer claims the episode has caused him ‘mental anguish’ whilst 1-800 Flowers say that although they take “all matters relating to our customers seriously” they are “not responsible for an individual's personal conduct".
If the above story hasn’t put you off completely flowers are still a pretty unbeatable gift. Whilst I don’t know about their policy on confidentiality Interflora are currently offering a
promotion on flowers
